Devá States was founded in December 2015 in Jakarta, Indonesia, by two friends — Theo Kusuma and Mol Edrin. Both were passionate about graphic design, t-shirts and the frustration of not being able to access the brands they loved due to customs and shipping fees. Instead of accepting that limitation, they built their own brand. A classic Wabi Sabi move.

The philosophy behind the name

The name says everything. Devá comes from Sanskrit — one of the oldest languages in Indonesia — and translates to «the shining one» or «anything of excellence.» Combined with States, it creates a deliberate double meaning: Divine State and Devastate.

The brand is rooted in the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi — the art of finding beauty in imperfection. Nothing is finished. Nothing needs to be perfect. That tension between excellence and imperfection drives every collection, every graphic, every decision the brand makes.

A world of references, one graphic language

Devá States doesn’t draw from one single source. Each collection is a collision of art movements, social phenomena, philosophy and counterculture. Punk rock, horror movies, 70s Ibiza club posters, Nirvana, Blondie, Philip K. Dick — all filtered through a graphic language that is instantly recognizable and impossible to categorize.

Bold text, surrealist imagery and scrapbook-style compositions make their pieces feel like wearable art. No two collections look the same, yet everything feels unmistakably Devá States. That consistency within chaos is exactly what makes the brand so compelling to those who find mainstream streetwear predictable and hollow.
